Rainy Afternoons In Amsterdam: A Photobook

By Erin Deborah Waks

Call me crazy, but I love a rainy day just as much as a hot, sunny one. There’s something about the innate cosiness of a downpour - or, indeed, light drizzle - that makes me want to curl up with a book. Given only a single day in Amsterdam on a flight stopover, I made the most of a city that, in fact, is pretty perfect in the rain…

Known for its beautiful tulips in a wild array of colours, the capital of the Netherlands is a perfect spot for a weekend away.

Even in the rain, wandering the canals is as picturesque as ever.

It’s Amsterdam so, naturally, one can buy candles in the shape of vulvas.

The bikes on every corner are one of the city’s quirks.

Stop for a drink at a viewing spot…

The National Holocaust Names Monument. I walked around here for a while, looking at names that seemed, unfortunately, far too familiar.

The coloured houses in the typical architectural style line the canals.

Even more tulips…

Sex: Jewish Positions at the Jewish museum presents a range of perspectives on sex and sexuality – from religion and rite to art and popular culture. I found it intriguing and much of the art really rather beautiful.

The exhibition explored the Jewish religious text of the Talmud and its perspective on sexuality through modern depictions of Talmudic scenes.

A quick coffee pitstop, featuring the pink tulips I purchased for myself.

The Portuguese Synagogue of Amsterdam.

The magnificent interiors of the synagogue.
